Speed Switches are divided into:
• mechanical speed switches (centrifugal force switches, type designation starts with FS ..), which are used for safety monitoring of speeds in drive engineering, regardless of the control system, and
• electronic speed switches (type designation starts with ES ..) that use a rectified voltage (own PSU or auxiliary supply) and one or more potentiometers which are set so that a one or more relays is/are operated when the speed limit(s) is/are reached.
• digital speed switches (type designation starts with DS ..) that use HTL or TTL signals from a rotary incremental encoder, independently of the drive control system itself, and generates an output signal for each one of three separately adjustable speeds. This feature can be used to implement a safety function or quality-control.
Speed switches are used to monitor speed limits (mechanical, electronic or digital)

Continuous monitoring and display of
- the speed, angular position, and position of the zero pulse
- the phase shift between K1 (A) and K2 (B)
- the pulse/pause ratio of K1 (A) and K2 (B)
- the voltage range of the encoder output signals
- the supply voltage and current drawn by the encoder, with the power consumption calculated from these values
Continuous error monitoring
- elimination of signal disturbances through adaptive filtering
- comparision of the nominal/actual number of pulses per turn
- errors in connection with the marker pulse
- check of the quadrature coding by evaluation of the track signals and the marker pulse
Individual error messages
Windows application software for the PC, for graphical display and statistical evaluation of the measurements
Recording of measurements and error messages in a logbook on the PC |
Display in plain text:
- Angle position
- Zero pulse position relative to the switching on position
- Speed n
- Voltage and current n

Explosion Proof Devices according to ATEX 95
The European Directive 94/9/EC has been adopted in order to standardize explosion protection (Ex protection) throughout Europe. This directive regulates the requirements for the characteristics of explosion-proof equipment and protection systems. Since 1st of July 2003 it will only be permissible to market items of explosion-proof electrical and mechanical equipment in Germany and the other European countries if these items have been certified in accordance with the new regulations. The evaluation can only be performed by a test center that has been accredited and notified in Brussels specifically for the testing and certification of products in accordance with ATEX.
Baumer Hübner, Berlin, achieved ATEX 95 in September 2002 and is offering incremental encoders and tacho generators that fulfill the ATEX directive.
This means that system manufacturers can now make use of the new components that meet ATEX 95 and look to the future with confidence. A subsequent approval of the complete system has thus been made considerably simpler.
